Tour Plan

Day 1–3: Your adventure begins at Thornybush Game Lodge

Welcome to South Africa!

Your adventure begins today as you fly into Hoedspruit, the gateway to the Greater Kruger National Park. After landing at this charming, intimate airport, you’ll collect your luggage and meet your transfer driver, who will be waiting with a sign bearing your name. From there, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Thornybush Game Lodge, where your safari experience truly begins.

As you enter the vast wilderness of Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, part of Greater Kruger and bordering Kruger National Park, the promise of unforgettable Big 5 sightings looms large, with lions and leopards often stealing the show. But it’s not just the big predators that captivate; the reserve’s incredible biodiversity means every game drive is a journey into the heart of Africa’s vibrant and varied ecosystem. Guided by expert trackers and rangers, you’ll gain insights into the intricate balance of life in the bushveld, deepening your connection to the natural world.

Thornybush Game Lodge, the original lodge of the reserve, offers more than just a place to stay – it’s a gateway to experiencing the wild in luxury. Established in 1961, this historic lodge is perfectly situated to immerse you in nature. Picture yourself relaxing on the deck, overlooking a waterhole where elephants and buffaloes frequently gather. The lodge combines rustic charm with modern sophistication, offering an authentic yet comfortable retreat after a day of adventure. With 18 elegant suites, each with an outdoor shower and views of the Monwana River bed, you’ll find the perfect balance of luxury and nature. The lodge’s dining experiences are equally impressive, from a hearty bush breakfast under the African sun to a candle-lit boma dinner, where traditional South African dishes are served around a crackling fire under the stars. Every meal here, led by the renowned chef Solly, celebrates local flavours and warm hospitality.

A typical day at Thornybush Game Lodge:

  • Morning: Begin your day with the sights and sounds of the bushveld as you enjoy tea, coffee, and homemade treats before setting out on a 3-hour game drive. Witness the wildlife awaken with the sunrise as your guide takes you closer to the action.
  • Afternoon: After a morning of exploration, return to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast. Spend the afternoon at your own pace – perhaps with a dip in the lodge pool, a visit to the spa, or simply relaxing on your private deck, watching wildlife pass by. Enjoy a delightful lunch and prepare for the next adventure.
  • Evening: As the sun dips low, head out for an afternoon game drive, where the changing light offers new perspectives and opportunities for sightings. Afterwards, unwind with a drink at the bar, followed by a gourmet dinner. Whether dining on the deck or around the boma fire, the evening promises to be as magical as the day.
  • Optional activities: Customise your experience with activities like bush walks to learn about the smaller wonders of the reserve.

Spend 3 nights at Thornybush Game Lodge

Days 4–6: Simbambili Game Lodge, Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Your last morning at Thornybush offers one more chance to explore the bush. Perhaps you'll set out to find that one elusive species that has so far evaded you. Whether it’s tracking a pride of lions, searching for a rare bird, or simply soaking in the early morning tranquillity, this final game drive promises to be a memorable conclusion to your stay. Afterwards, you'll return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, reflecting on the incredible moments you've experienced.

As you pack up and prepare for the next leg of your journey, there’s a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead. Your guide will meet you in the lodge lobby, ready to transfer you to the nearby airstrip. There, a small aircraft awaits to whisk you away to the next destination – Simbambili Game Lodge, located in the renowned Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Here you will seek out Sabi Sands' famous leopards, search for wild dogs and lions, and enjoy the thrills of the wide range of species thriving here.

Simbambili Game Lodge

Nestled in the heart of Sabi Sands, Simbambili Game Lodge is a sanctuary of luxury and comfort, seamlessly blending into the natural landscape. Simbambili is known for its world-class game viewing and intimate atmosphere. The suites are designed to offer both privacy and an immersive experience, with expansive decks, private plunge pools, and shaded sala beds where you can relax and watch the wildlife pass by.

At Simbambili, every detail is crafted to make you feel at home. Whether you’re lounging on the main deck, keeping an eye on the waterhole across from the lodge, or engaging in conversation with knowledgeable guides and trackers, the atmosphere is one of warmth and connection. The lodge’s setting, amidst dense stands of Knobthorn and Jackalberry trees along the Manyeleti River, adds to the sense of seclusion and tranquillity.

A typical day at Simbambili:

  • Morning: Wake up to the sound of the bushveld coming alive, and enjoy a selection of tea, coffee, and homemade treats before setting out on your morning game drive. Spend the next three hours exploring the reserve, with the chance to witness predator interactions, track herds of elephants, or spot one of the area’s famous leopards.
  • Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast, followed by time to unwind. Whether you choose to relax by your private plunge pool, indulge in a spa treatment, or simply enjoy the view from your deck, the afternoon is yours to savour. A delicious lunch is served later, setting the stage for the day’s second adventure.
  • Evening: Head out for an afternoon game drive, where the changing light creates perfect conditions for photography and wildlife sightings. As the sun sets, enjoy sundowners in the bush before returning to the lodge. The day ends with a gourmet dinner, served either on the deck or around the boma fire, where you can share stories of the day’s encounters under the African sky.

Spend 3 nights at Simbambili

Welcome to the Mother City!

Upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport, after collecting your luggage, your transfer driver will meet you – look for your name on a board – and take you safely to your accommodation at the Cape Town Waterfront.

At leisure:

The rest of the day is at your leisure. You might consider exploring the nearby V&A Waterfront, known for its vibrant atmosphere, historic sites, and top-quality restaurants.

Day 8: Full-day unique Cape Peninsula tour

After breakfast, you will meet your tour guide in the lobby at 08:30.

Cape Peninsula Wet & Wild Adventure

The aim of the day is to explore the highlights of the Cape Peninsula in a unique way off the beaten path, looking for any excuse to embrace the ocean and explore one of the most unique marine habitats in the world.

Today you will go along the stunning Cape Peninsula to the False Bay coastline. Highlights of the day will include:

  • Explore Kalk Bay – See the resident seals and meet the town's fishing folk
  • Explore with penguins – Stand-up paddle, kayak or conservation walk near Boulders Beach, Simon's Town where African penguins waddle around as if you are not there
  • Explore Cape Point – History, wildlife and nature
  • Lunch – Enjoy a private, wild Peninsula picnic or fine-dining lunch (lunch, selected drinks and lunch gratuity included)
  • Explore – Noordhoek Farm Village with a cheeky 'Kick Ass' ice cream or coffee
  • Explore – all 144 curves of Cape Town's most scenic road - Chapman’s Peak Drive
  • Local hangout drinks with a view or vibe – Cape Peninsula

You will start the day by heading past the Surf Mecca Beach of Muizenberg before stopping in Kalk Bay, best known for its working fishing harbour and bohemian feel. Here, you will start the day with a coffee in one of your favourite bakeries/coffee shops. At Kalk Bay, you will walk through this very quaint old holiday town filled with antique shops, galleries, craftspeople and vendors. Kalk Bay is a working fishing community filled with brightly coloured boats, some noisy seals, and even louder ladies who are hard at work processing the day's catch!

From here, you will drive along the coast towards Simon's Town, where you will search for a splinter colony of penguins on a beach mainly enjoyed by locals. Perhaps if the weather is favorable you could test out your balancing skills on a stand-up paddle board/kayak to get to know the penguins in their environment. (This is optional). Alternatively, you will be taken on an educational and enlightening penguin walk on the walkways bordering the penguin sanctuary.

Your guide will tell you more about the rich naval history as demonstrated in the museums and monuments, providing plenty of insight into this historical harbour town.

You will then continue to the Cape of Good Hope. In the Cape Peninsula Reserve you will enjoy a gentle hike exploring secluded beaches, shipwrecks and unique wildlife such as the Cape 5 (ostrich, baboon, mountain zebra, bontebok and leopard tortoise).

Wind the afternoon down with a visit to the local Noordhoek Farm Village, where you can all enjoy a delicious artisanal ice cream at Kristen's Kick Ass Ice Cream, before heading back towards the city centre along the most scenic drive of all: Chapman's Peak. Stop at a magical surprise location for an early evening drink as a local.

After a full day, it will be time to be dropped off at your hotel. Enjoy dinner at the hotel restaurant or head out to one of Cape Town's many restaurants (not included).
